Belts have various categories. Many kinds can be used in automobiles. Fan belt is one type that is widely applied in autos. What is a fan belt? It is defined as a taut rubber belt that transfers torque from the crankshaft to the shaft of the cooling fan on an engine. Sometimes, it also refers to any belt that drives a fan, especially the belt that drives a cooling fan together with a dynamo or alternator in a car engine.
A fan belt is an essential engine component in most vehicles. It is also called a drive belt which connects the engine cooling fan to the alternator and crankshaft pulley. When the engine is running, it rotates and generates power. Besides, it is also used to power components such as the air conditioner compressor, the power steering pump and the water pump.
Many people may have the awareness to check the fan belts regularly to ensure proper engine performance. However, those products may still wear down over time and break. Thus, if you do this, you need to check the belt for any unusual or excessive wear or to see if it’s frayed at all. If you find any cracks in the belt or it’s rubbed down and frayed, you have replace it with a new one because a worn fan belt will squeak and make noise during operation and cause more serious problems.
The following are some of the replacement steps which may give you some help. First of all, you should choose the appropriate product to match with the engine because belts have several different configurations of serpentines. Secondly, you need to slip old belt off the pulleys and remove it by loosening the tension in one of the pulleys with a wrench.
Thirdly, you should put the new belt according to the exact same path as the old one. Then you can adjust it to a proper situation. For example, you should fit the belt and tighten the tensioner bolt if you want to keep the belt tight. But you should make sure that the belt would no be too tight, or it won’t turn properly.
Fourthly, after the replacement, you should test the fan belt to see whether it can perform properly or not. You can judge if the belt is tight enough quite easily. You have to turn on the engine, and then crank up the air conditioner. If the belt turns without squealing and the A/C works well, you have it correctly adjusted. Otherwise, you have to tighten the belt tensioner a little.
The above mentioned are some important steps for the replacement of the fan belts. And they will be helpful when your fan belts on your cars begin to show signs of wearing down.
